Sandy Oak Chesapeakes

Out with a bang.. goodbye 2011!! Hello 2012!

Well, here we are again, the year is almost over, and Christmas will be here before we know it. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving....I know we did!

It's been a great year for us here at Sandy Oak...Lacey and Ben had another litter of 10 beautiful pups....the photos and videos are still on the website. We encourage anyone with pups from this litter to send their photos in to me and we will post them on a special page on the website for this litter. I kept a lovely bitch pup from the litter who we are calling Molly, registered name is Sandy Oak's Earth Wind & Fire. Annie, aka GrCh. Sandy Oak's Wish Upon A Star RN CGC finished her Grand Championship last month handled by both Catherine Collins, her co-owner, and myself. Also, to anyone who has not yet sent in your pup's AKC registration application to AKC, pleeease do so as there are benefits from AKC available to all who have registered pups including their Companion Animal Recovery program should your pup be lost.

We also have another big NEWS FLASH!!! New CHAMPION: CH SANDY OAK'S OH HENRY! finished his conformation championship this weekend beautifully handled by Catherine Collins, also his co-breeder. Henry was Winner's Dog this past Saturday at the Golden Valley Kennel Club show in Turlock for a point awarded by the well-known judge Mr. Edd E. Biven. On Sunday, Henry finished his title at the San Joaquin Kennel Club show in Stockton with 2 points and Winners Dog and Best of Winners awarded by the renowned judge Dr. Bob G. Smith. Henry is loved, owned & trained by Greg & Luann Nealon. Henry is from the 2010 breeding of Lacey to Ben and finished his title in only 4 months at 15 months of age.

I'm in love with my puppy Molly.....she is so smart, learns very quickly and is an incredible retriever. She is also a talker and never hesitates to let us know what she thinks about everything. I have high hopes for the future for Molly.

As the year winds down, so have any upcoming events for us, but we kick off 2012 with The American Chesapeake Club supported entry at the big Golden Gate Kennel Club benched shows at the Cow Palace in San Francisco on January 28th & 29th. Molly, Henry, Lacey, Annie and our young male Papillon are entered both days. As it is like a mini-specialty for Chesapeakes, we should have a good entry at this show and there are a ton of vendors who will be selling their incredible variety of their canine wares. This is also one of the few remaining benched shows in the United States, which means that when the entered dogs are not actually being judged, they must be in their designated benching areas for the duration of the two days of shows. So you can meet your breed, talk to their owners and enjoy yourself surrounded by wall-to-wall dogs, then head on down to the rings and watch the judging. Unentered dogs will not be admitted, so please leave your canine pal safely at home if you come to watch.

As you may have noticed from information elsewhere on this site, our next planned breeding is our deadgrass Chesany's SandyOak Dare To Dream ("Dedee"), to Henry and Molly's father, Ch. Crackshot Ben There Done That***. Dedee has just recently obtained all of her health certifications including an "excellent" rating for hips, and Ben, of course, has all of his. Dedee is due in heat any day now so we will breed her when the time is right. Anticipated due date for pups should be around the end of January to mid February.

On a sad note, after doing everything we could over a 10 day period earlier this month, we finally had to give in to her old body and put my palomino Quarter Horse, Callie, i.e. California Champagne, to sleep. Sadly, this month Callie started colicking and despite vet calls and repeated treatments, it kept getting worse. Callie came to Sandy Oak as a green-broke 2 year old in 1988 from some Chesapeake friends. She was an incredible trail horse and became a permanent fixture at Sandy Oak even though I've only ridden her a couple of times in the last 8-10 years. She was almost 26 years old and will be missed for a long time to come.

So, best wishes to everyone for a wonderful and merry Christmas, and a safe and Happy New Year. We will look for you in 2012.
